Limited Access Policy

As usual, we are also instituting a more restrictive access policy for the exam study period.  From 11/30 – 12/18 we will not make any UC user access tickets available, and UC users will have to establish that they have specific need of Law Library materials (by showing us a course assignment or a letter from a professor) before they will be allowed in the Library.

Conference Rooms

In anticipation of the conference rooms being even more heavily used this time of year—with a number of “first-timers” joining in—I wanted to remind everyone that conference room reservations are handled online by going to http://rooms.law.ucla.edu.  You will need to login with your LawNet credentials as follows:  LAWNET\username. If you need assistance with the login, please don’t hesitate to ask for help at the circulation desk.  I’d also like to remind you that your M70 key will get you into the rooms.  Remember that you can only make one reservation per day for a maximum of three hours and reservations can only be made the same day.  More information about the Conference Rooms is available on the web at: http://www.law.ucla.edu/home/index.asp?page=2567

PLEASE NOTE:  You will not be able to delete your conference room reservations during the reading/examination period (beginning November 30).

Important Changes in the Library for the 2009/10 School Year

Welcome! Here's an update with some important changes we implemented in the library for this year and some useful information:

  • We have moved the ERes Course pages behind the Law School Intranet, which means you will now need to login with your LawNET or BOL username and password to get access to your course pages.  Please also note that the address has changed to http://eres.law.ucla.edu (although the old link still works).
  • We have changed our beverage policy so that beverages are allowed only in sealable, reusable containers.  Beverages in disposable containers are strictly prohibited. This was done both to meet the demand for allowing usage of reusable containers other than the approved library mugs and to adopt a more environmentally friendly policy.
  • We now have an online library tour available at http://www.law.ucla.edu/librarytour.
  • We have created a Guide for First Year Law Students on LibGuides and even returning students might be interested in the section called:  Food/Fun Guide to UCLA & Westwood.
  • We have a new look for our Tower Reading Room and Law & Popular Culture Video/DVD collection lists.

Law Library Hours Over Winter Break

Dear Law Students,

As you may know, the Law Library will be closed to the public from December 20 through January 1; however if you need to use the library December 22 & 23, there will be library staff available from 9 am – 4:30 pm. To gain access to the library on these days, simply knock on the front door. Please be prepared to show your BruinCard.

PLEASE NOTE: Because the whole campus will be closed December 24 – January 1, no one, including members of Law Reviews and Journals, will be allowed in the library during that time.

The Computer Lab will also be available the dates and times listed above, but it will not be staffed. You will also have access to the LexisNexis and Westlaw printers and the scanner in the After Hours Reading Room during the listed hours.

On January 2, the library will be open to the public from 9am – 4:30 pm. Regular library hours resume on January 3.

"Writing on the Wall" or "Why is it so cold in the Library?"

Dear Students,

We would like to wish you the best of luck on your upcoming finals! We hope the library is a comfortable and clean environment to aid in your studies but we could use your help!

If you notice that temperature levels are uncomfortable, observe other problems such as lights out in the study carrels, or discover plumbing problems, please let us know! You can report these problems by e-mailing Nancy Berkowitz (berkowit@law.ucla.edu) or by notifying staff at the Circulation Desk. Helpful information to have is the area where the problem is located – including floor and stack info (2nd floor, KFC, aisle __, for example). It is a big library and we have been working hard to keep it beautiful and comfortable. Your help is greatly appreciated!

And remember -- the Library is a food and cell-free zone. Take a short break from studying and take your food or cell phone outside. Your body, brain, and classmates will thank you!

Again, good luck on finals and we hope you have a relaxing winter break.

Bloomberg Law Available to UCLA Law Students

Posted on behalf of Kevin Gerson, Law Library Director:

Dear all 2Ls and 3Ls,

I’m pleased to let you know that Bloomberg, the premier provider of business and financial information, is expanding into the legal information arena and will be at the Law School to give out free accounts during the week of Sept 15.

The new Bloomberg Law service is an all-inclusive tool providing legal analysis, filings, opinions, real-time and archival news, and company and financial information. Once you receive your Bloomberg account, you will be able to access the service via the Web using a biometric device, called the B-Unit.

The Bloomberg representatives will have a table set up in the courtyard on Sept 15 and 16 to sign up students, so please stop by if you would like to get an account. The reps will remain at the Law School Sept 17-19 to provide training sessions.

Some of your professors are requesting that you get accounts for course work. If so, this is the time. Those of you receiving accounts will be allowed to keep the account for free for up to six months after graduation.

Thank you,
Kevin
