New Library Policies for Fall 2008

Due to popular demand, we are now allowing UCLA Law Students (only) to take Reserve materials outside of the library. The two hour loan period still applies, so make sure you return the materials on time because, as before, overdue fines will start accruing if you don’t.

Speaking of overdue fines…over the summer, the library system moved all library fines and fees to your student BAR accounts.  This seems to have been a smooth transition and hopefully this system will be easier for everyone.  If you have any questions about Library BAR billing, feel free to contact our Circulation, Reserve and Stacks Manager, Beatrice Lewin Dumin (dumin@law.ucla.edu or 310-794-5406).

Welcome New Law Students!

On behalf of the Law Library Staff, I'd like to formally welcome you all to the UCLA School of Law. Please know that we are here to help you, so don't hesitate to ask our Circulation Desk staff about anything from how to find your reserve materials to how to make free scans.  In addition, the Reference Librarians are here to help you with your research for your papers or projects.  If you want to know who we are and what we look like, please be sure to look for our photos on the Library Staff web page on the Law School Intranet.

At orientation you received our Quick Guide to get you started on using the library.  More complete information is available on our Services for UCLA Law Students page. Pay particular attention to the link "Just for Law Students."  You will find addtional helpful information on this blog, particulary in the two entries immediately prior to this one.

If you didn't come to the library during orienation, we have your orienation materials waiting for you at the Circulation Desk, including your library wallet (for easy library access), your library tote bag and your approved library mug.

I hope you will be pleased with the services we offer you, but don't hesitate to let me know if you have any suggestions or comments (gulnac@law.ucla.edu)

A Dining Guide to Westwood Village

Wondering where to get a good burger in Westwood?  Looking for some great coffee?  Here's a quick guide to some of my favorite places in the Village. In addition to my list, you can find a more complete (but slightly out of date) listing of restaurants (and stores and theaters) at Westwood Village Online.

Good food, fast (here are a few notables):

  • Damon & Pythias (1061 Broxton) - The Turkey Club and garlic fries are standouts!
  • Le Pain Quotidien (1055 Broxton Ave.) - A bit pricier than the others, but it's all good!
  • Falafel King (1051 Broxton) - Excellent falafel, shawarma and sauces!
  • Corner Bakery Cafe (1019 Westwood Blvd.) - The soups and pastries are fantastic!
  • Lamonica's New York Pizza (1066 Gayley Ave.) - Quintessential pizza! You can buy pizza by the slice.
  • In-n-Out Burger at Gayley & LeConte (922 Gayley Ave.)
  • Fatburger (10955 Kinross Ave., near the entrance to Lot 32)
  • Baja Fresh (10916 Lindbrook Ave.)
  • Sepi's Giant Submarines (10968 Le Conte Ave.) - A UCLA favorite.  Super cheap and has beer by the pitcher!
  • Daphne's Greek Cafe (10889 Lindbrook Ave.)
  • Noodle Planet (1118 Westwood Blvd.)
  • Native Foods (1110 1/2 Gayley Ave.) - Excellent Vegetarian and Vegan food!

Coffee:

Starbucks and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf are well represented in Westwood, but you can find the best coffee at Peet's Coffee & Tea  (1154 Westwood).

Cookies & Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt:

  • Diddy Riese - I would be remiss if I didn't mention this Westwood institution (926 Broxton Ave.).  Think Mrs. Field's-like goodness at a fraction of the cost.  They are famous for their build your own ice cream sandwiches--a bargain at $1.50 (and you can even plan out what you want ahead of time by using their "ice cream sandwich builder page").
  • Pinkberry - (10911 Lindbrook) aka "Crackberry" has grown from one small store in West Hollywood to almost 50 stores in California and New York in three short years. A cultural phenomenon!  (Be sure to check out the Pinkberry song on YouTube!)

Campus Food Highlights:

  • Jamba Juice in Ackerman Union--reportedly the largest Jamba Juice store to date.
  • Espresso Roma at the Anderson School of Management - A changing selection of great salads, sandwiches and hot entrees with the best coffee on campus.

Groceries:

Best of the best just off campus (all are on Big Blue Bus Lines, as noted)

  • Poquito Mas - (2215  Westwood Blvd., Bus line 8 or 12) - My absolute favorite Mexican fast food chain.
  • Feast from the East (1949 Westwood Blvd., Bus line 8 or 12) - The best Chinese Chicken salad in town.
  • Apple Pan - (10801 W. Pico Blvd., Bus line 8 or 12, get off at Pico and go one block east) This L.A. landmark is famous for its burgers and apple pie.  You simply must try it! (Read about Apple Pan on Wikipedia)
  • Zankou Chicken - (1716 S. Sepulveda, Bus Line 1, get off at Sepulveda and go south)  Probably the best chicken in town (it was even mentioned in a Beck song).
  • New India Grill - (1321 Westwood Blvd, Bus lines 1, 8 or 12) notable for its inexpensive all you can eat lunch buffet (newly remodeled and expanded restaurant)

"Hidden" Campus Gems

If you know where to look, you can find some amazing (and mostly free) things to see and do around the UCLA campus. Some of these are obvious, but some are probably unknown even to people who have been at UCLA for years.  All are worth your time, so be sure to add them to your list of things to do.
  • Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden -- Let's start with the one closest to the Law School--it's practically in our backyard (just keep going north past LuValle Commons)!   It is considered "One of the most distinguished outdoor sculpture collections in the country."  The garden covers 5 acres of North Campus and features works by Calder, Rodin, Noguchi, Matisse, Miro and more!  If you are extra stressed, head out to the Sculpture Garden for a picnic lunch! (Tours are also available).
  • Film & Television Archive (FATA) Screenings -- Just north of the Sculpture Garden, FATA holds regular screenings of their collection in the James Bridges Theater in Melnitz Hall.  Tickets are normally $5 for students (and occasionally admission is free).  Screenings are usually themed (e.g., Documentary Tuesdays) and often include a talk by someone associated with the film or with specialized knowledge about it.  A perfect evening study break for students!  Catch a film and then back to the library to get a couple more study hours in...
  • Fowler Museum -- A fantastic museum right here on campus and admission is free! According to their Web site: "The Fowler's collections comprise more than 150,000 art and ethnographic and 600,000 archaeological objects representing prehistoric, historic, and contemporary cultures of Africa, Native and Latin America, and Asia and the Pacific."  This museum is not to be missed! Check their event calendar for interesting upcoming events.
  • Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden -- Located on the southern part of campus (just east of the Center for Health Sciences), this 7 acre garden includes plant specimens from all over the world.  Admission is free and tours can be arranged for groups of eight or more.  Another great way to spend your lunch time.
  • Planetarium Show and Telescope Viewing -- Did you even know there was a planetarium on campus? Don't expect a Pink Floyd laser light show, but do expect informative talks on topics such as "Galaxies" and "Life in the Universe."  On clear nights, you will have the opportunity to look through the telescope.  The planetarium and telescope are located on the 8th floor of the Mathematical Sciences building and are part of the Astronomy and Astrophysics department.  The shows are every Wednesday night during the Fall, Winter and Spring Quarters and the 2nd and 4th Wednesday in the summer (which means there is a show tomorrow night, 8/23, 8pm)!  This is another freebie!
  • Cultural Virtual Reality Lab -- I bet you didn't know about this one either!  This is a little more difficult to explain, but the lab was developed to create authentic 3-D models of architecturally and culturally significant sites around the world.  The thing to see here is the Visualization Portal in the Math Sciences Building.  They offer periodic presentations of the lab's work and explain their VR process.  It's super cool! This short movie will give you an idea of what it's about. Contact events@ats.ucla.edu for more information.
  • UCLA Live -- In the not-so-free department, students get great discounts (up to 75%) on UCLA Live events in Royce Hall.  This is really a great opportunity to see world class entertainment on a budget.

That's a start!  There is much more out there and one way to find out about more great stuff on campus is check "Happenings" regularly or sign up for an RSS feed or podcast!
