Question from Law Student posted to the Question/Suggestion Box

I hope that you are doing well. I have a question and possible request for the library. Does the library have materials for law students/attorneys in translating; either a Spanish and English Legal Dictionary or a set of books that assist attorneys with brushing up on Spanish skills? If not, can the library purchase one? I have had hard time translating several documents into Spanish due to the technical, legalese language that is necessary. I am a current 3L.

Hi. Yes, the library has a number of resources you can use to assist in translating legal materials from Spanish to English. Perhaps the most helpful are three Spanish law dictionaries located in the reference reading room:

  1. Title: Spanish law dictionary : Spanish/English, English/Spanish
Location: Law Library Reference Reading Room
    Call Number: K52.S6 S67 1999
  2. Title: Dahl's law dictionary: Spanish-English/English-Spanish: an annotated legal dictionary, including authoritative
definitions from codes, case law, statutes, legal writing, international treaties and legal opinions from attorneys general Location: Law Library Reference Reading Room
    Call Number: K52.S6 D33 2005
  3. Title: West's Spanish-English, English-Spanish law dictionary: translations of terms, phrases and definitions of
concepts of modern Spanish and English legal terminology
Location: Law Library Reference Reading Room
    Call Number: K52.S6 S65 1992

I hope these meet your needs. You can see our other similar resources at call number K52.S6, which is located in the stacks on the first floor of the library. Please feel free to come to the reference desk for additional help.

Shakespeare in the Park (Free!)

Grab your blankets and a picnic basket and head out to Barnsdale Park.  For two more weekends, you can see The Scottish Play, Midsummer Night's Dream, or Richard II for free!

The plays, produced by the Independent Shakespeare Company are really good.  We saw The Dream on Saturday and it was quite excellent.  The venue is in a park, so the set is minimal, costumes simple, but the acting -- terrific!  It is a real treat to hear performers who really understand Shakespearean dialogue -- they speak clearly, with no fake english accents, and truly invest emotion and intelligence into their performances.  I have not seen Richard II or the Scottish Play, but have heard the performances of those are as good as the Dream.

Reservations are highly recommended, especially for weekend performances. Contact info:  (818) 710-6306; boxoffice@independentshakespeare.com and for info about the ISC:(http://www.independentshakespeare.com/)

The Westwood Crest Theatre

Welcome to the latest installment of (Re)Discover L.A. Summertime is almost done (as far as the UCLA School of Law is concerned) and you may need something to do one night or weekend. Well look no further than Westwood Blvd to the Westwood Crest Theatre. Located at 1262 Westwood Blvd just south of Wilshire Blvd this theater provides a combination of a night out at the movies along with a neighborhood feel. With a look of yesteryear on the outside and beautiful murals on the inside (visable during the movies and while you wait before the show) the Crest is a refreshing change from the norm evident as soon as you step inside to buy your tickets. Since there is only one theater you really don't need directions but they still have ushers to welcome you in. And on most nights the owner of the Crest is out taking your tickets and greeting you too. After you grab your snacks for the show (no outside food of course) be sure to leave time before the show to view the murals inside the theater that cover both walls. Look carefully for moving items. There are both twinkling and shooting stars as well as other fun things to look for. If you should have the time to make it to an opening night be sure to get there early. They usually have contests and prizes before the show. They can range from trivia questions to singing contests. Usually done for the younger audience, all are welcome to participate. And of course once the curtains go up (yes curtains) and the movie begins you cannot help but feel a flash of the old drive-in with the glow in the dark mural providing the stars and night skyline while you watch the movie (but in the comfort of an indoor movie theater). So be sure to take a night an enjoy the Westwood Crest Theatre.
